Putting your boat away for the season? Give the deck a little attention before the cover goes on. Dirt left in grooves, damp gear sitting on the floor, and a loose edge you meant to check can all be harder to deal with when the boat comes out of storage.

This checklist is for boat flooring that is already installed. If you are planning a new installation, wait until the deck and working conditions meet the instructions for your specific product.

1. Clear the deck and look at the entire floor

Remove coolers, loose mats, fishing gear, and anything else resting on the EVA. Sweep or rinse away sand and debris so you can see the seams and edges. Check the cockpit, swim platform, steps, and the areas around hatches and drains. Take a few photos now; they can help you compare the floor's condition when you reopen the boat.

2. Wash away the season's residue

Use fresh water, mild soap, and a soft brush or cloth. Work gently along the grooves, then rinse thoroughly. If you find fish blood, sunscreen, oil, or other stubborn marks, treat the stain promptly using a cleaner that is suitable for your flooring and test it on a small, less visible area first. Avoid harsh solvents, metal brushes, and a pressure-washer nozzle held close to the mat edges.

3. Let the boat and gear dry before covering

EVA foam resists absorbing water, but moisture can still remain on its surface, in grooves, around hardware, under gear, or elsewhere in the boat. Open access points as appropriate, let the cleaned deck dry, and remove wet towels, ropes, cushions, and covers from contact with the floor. Make sure drains are clear and follow your boat manufacturer's storage guidance for ventilation and winterization.

Do not assume the EVA flooring makes the deck or the boat waterproof. If you find persistent moisture or water entering a hatch, investigate the source before storage.

4. Check seams and edges without pulling them up

Walk around the installed pieces and look for lifting corners, gaps, damage, or areas that feel loose. Pay special attention to traffic paths and the swim platform. Photograph any concern from above and from the side. Do not force a loose section back down over dirt or moisture, and do not peel up a sound piece just to inspect beneath it. A repair decision depends on the condition of the EVA, adhesive, and underlying deck.

5. Keep the cover and stored equipment from trapping water

Use a properly supported boat cover so rain and snow do not pool over the cockpit. Keep heavy or sharp equipment off the EVA for long storage periods, and avoid leaving wet items pressed against the deck. Check the boat periodically if your storage arrangement allows it, especially after storms. Follow the boat and cover manufacturers' instructions; flooring care does not replace engine, plumbing, battery, or hull winterization.

6. Make a short spring reopening list

Before you close the boat, note any areas that need cleaning, repair, or replacement. When the season starts again, uncover the boat, let the deck air out, inspect the same seams and edges, and clean off any storage dust before use. If you are replacing worn flooring, take clear photos of the deck and confirm the boat's year, model, layout, and coverage areas before ordering.

Should I remove peel-and-stick EVA flooring for winter?

Generally, installed adhesive-backed flooring is intended to stay in place. Clean and inspect it without peeling it up. Follow any product-specific guidance you received with your kit.

Can I cover the boat right after rinsing the floor?

Let the deck and nearby wet areas dry first. A cover placed over a damp boat can trap moisture, even though the EVA material itself resists water absorption.

What if a corner is lifting before storage?

Photograph it and check for moisture, dirt, or damage. Do not apply adhesive over a wet or unstable surface. Contact the flooring supplier with photos for a repair recommendation.
